Bedding

B
edding serves two functions. It keeps the baby warm at night and contributes to the decoration of the room. It also contributes to the decoration of the shop and the right bedding can improve sales of other items. How?

Displays of cots, bedding and décor are an important facet of a well laid out nursery store. Unlike items such as pushchairs and car seats, this area is not so driven by brands. Indeed, I would wager that few parents know the brand of their cot and fewer still the brand of the bedding.

What parents do know is what they like. It may be different from what you and I like so a wide choice is important. Get them to fall for a particular look and the sale is there as they are less likely to go elsewhere to try and find it a few pence cheaper.

Once a parent is spending, it is easier then to add other items to their list…

But bedding isn't just about colours. There are also practical things such as mattress covers which they often don't think about. And it can be hard to remind a pregnant woman about sick, leaking nappies and regurgitated milk.

Cot death is a subject that is often in the back of parents' minds and bedding is one thing they need to know about. Things like feet to foot, not overheating, not getting the head covered etc. All this gives the retailer an opportunity to shine, to be seen as 'someone who knows'

There's lots to choose from so there’s no reason why your shop shouldn’t have a good selection from plain to patterned, from white, though pastels to something bright and colourful, from cute to bold. Sheets, blankets, and yes even cot bumpers are coming back – in a safer form (see Minene for more!)

There’s plenty of opportunity to be different!
