Bathtime B athtime is one of the nicest times of the day with a small baby. But all too often the things that make this so easy and enjoyable are stuck in the back of the shop or hidden away. The latest colours are meant to be seen!
Although there is nothing stopping parents bathing their baby in the kitchen sink – it’s the right size, and at a convenient height with water literally on tap, a baby bath makes things so much easier and more pleasurable. A baby bath can be used on the floor or inside the adult bath. The best way, however, is to use a bathstand which although it pushes up the price is very useful. Alternatively, many parents choose to buy a changing unit which incorporates a bath. A baby bath full of water is not only heavy but difficult to carry without the water slopping out so those which have a plug and pipe to drain the water into a bucket make sense. The bucket type baths are much easier in this respect. Even with the bath at the right height, bathing a baby can be quite a strain on the back so a bath support for a newborn baby is a useful extra. For older children a bath seat is useful. However, parents should be warned that using one of these is no substitute for supervision. There have been too many instances where the child has drowned when the suction feet holding the seat have given way. Never leave a baby unattended in a bath, no matter how shallow the water. As baby is removed from the bath a towel is needed, for somewhat obvious reasons. A baby towel is another ideal present, especially one which comes with a hood to keep baby’s head warm (most heat is lost through the head) or even one that can be worn by mum or dad! These baby towels give the additional bonus that as they dry baby they cuddle him, thus improving the bond between parent and child. These sort of towels make excellent presents. Finally, there are a number of extras which can be useful – thermometers to ensure the water is at the right temperature, sponges, wash mitts as well as nail scissors, nasal aspirators and protectors for the taps. |
