That was the (brilliant) week that was…

Another Harrogate has been and gone, and although tiring, the consensus is that Harrogate exceeded all expectations.

There were the usual mumblings of it seeming quiet but even the moaners had to admit that exhibitors were delighted by the results, as were the retailers with what they found. Indeed several retailers ran out of time and didn't get to see everyone they wanted to.

Retailers from across the country – from Scotland to Torquay – came, although London appeared to be poorly represented. Many of the majors did in fact come, although it appears that they were 'just looking'. It really is the time of the indie! It is they who will be driving this market forward in the next few years.

The return of several 'big' suppliers certainly helped. As I have said in the past, you don't need to bring everything and although I don't take credit for their strategy, Silver Cross certainly made waves by having a pushchair-free stand!! Their rationale was that their pushchairs are well-known and they wanted to shout about their new range of car seats. The message certainly got through and their stand was busy throughout the show.

Invictus is a new brand to the UK and signed up 38 new retailers. Most visitors commented that they had heard about the brand. This goes to show the power of advertising. (And it was all through Nursery Online, folks, even if many of you couldn't remember!)

There were many interesting new products. I met milkymeter last year in Cologne and was impressed. Mothers are often told not to use the microwave to heat baby's bottle because of the danger of overheating, but many parents do it anyway. Milkymeter is a thermometer for use in the microwave and solves the problem.

Another European company has arrived in the UK. Childhome is a company whose products I've seen and loved at K+J and now they have appointed CuddleCo to be their UK distributor. And (probably not surprisingly as it often wins awards), their EVOLU ONE.80 was the winner in the Home & Nursery category of the BANTAs.

There were several developments in monitors. Babymoov have extended their range to include several more and there were three new brands. Parvel is a Swedish company with a tiny monitor that you can take wherever you go. The Liip Smart Monitor fastens around baby's ankle or wrist and alerts if anything is amiss with baby's vital signs and Topcom showcased a range of monitors, themometers, scales and accessories

Baby Oliver had some beautiful bedding which retailers will need to have in stock before the Royal baby arrives. The high end, hand-carved furniture from Babeek may not be to everyone's taste but, boy, does it make a statement!

I’d love to talk more about the lovely products that were on show and I’m sure to be cross with myself for forgetting so and so – and of course what’s-their-name. So sorry if I’ve missed you. Send me a press release for our next newsletter!

I've been aware that many in the industry were concerned that Trade shows had had their day, but this week in Harrogate has proved them wrong - very wrong!

The dates for next year are 29th to 31st March 2020 and with so many exhibitors saying they'll be back, the team will be needing more space.

The buzz is back in Harrogate

According to initial feedback, the UK’s only baby trade show – Harrogate International Nursery Fair – is firmly back on the map!

Exhibitors reported packed order books and retailers are worrying about finding space in their stores for the fabulous new products they ordered!

Shnuggle – Clever Baby Products extended a big thank you for the massive support of so many independents at Harrogate stating: “We have exhibited every year for the last eight years and each year we get a little bigger. We are glad to be part of this great UK tradition and opened lots of new accounts and caught up with many existing ones too.”

Nicola Carrera of WHL Europe, which returned to the show in 2019, commented: “We attended with our three brands Pink Lining, Purflo and Koo-Di and our stand was buzzing with lots of lovely comments. We truly know we did the right thing in coming to Harrogate this year and we loved seeing new and existing retailers. We thought the layout of the show worked well and there was definitely a spark in the air!”

Invictusbaby UK was a new exhibitor and Donna Kosloff, sales director, commented: “We had a sensational show. We specialise in boutique retailers and signed up 38 new shops; and almost everyone visiting our stand placed an order. We brought a sledge to the show as part of our stand display and this proved so popular, with retailers asking for one for their shops, that we offered a free one with every order of 12 dolls prams.”

Retailer Mehzabeen Patel of Mums Mate in Bolton thoroughly enjoyed her visit pointing out some of her show favourites such as the new Santino and Plumo from Mee-go; the Giggle 4 from Cosatto; and collections from Nania and Venicci. She commented: “It’s now time to sell, sell, sell in store as I need a clear floor to accommodate all of my Harrogate deliveries. The offers at the show made it really worthwhile attending. Well done to everyone exhibiting – it was nice to meet people I had spoken to on the phone and put faces to names.”

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, said: “This year has been an amazing turn-around for Harrogate. We saw the return of major brands as well as new product launches from regular exhibitors and those brand new to the show. There was a definite buzz in the air throughout the entire three days and early feedback suggests that business was good all-round.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2020 – the dates are 29th to 31st March 2020. Bookings will open in May, with priority given to all existing exhibitors who will be contacted directly nearer the time.”

Another win for the Childhome EVOLU ONE.80°

The first day of the Harrogate International Nursery Fair ended in a big celebration for Childhome. Their famous high chair with swivel function, the EVOLU ONE.80°, was the winner in the Home & Nursery category of the Baby and Nursery Trade Awards 2019 (BANTA’s).

Baby Kingdom Collection founder reveals how ingredients ‘let babies smell like babies’

The founder of Baby Kingdom Collection has revealed how the ingredients of their products ‘let babies smell like babies’.

Caroline Mukherjee, brand founder at the premium British baby toiletries brand which launched last November, is letting UK distributors know what makes them different from other baby skincare products on the market.

Mukherjee explained that the range of Baby Kingdom Collection products, which includes a natural baby shampoo, body cream, talc-free baby powder, nappy cream and 2-in-1 hair and body wash, uses a combination of key ingredients ideal for young, delicate skin with a unique gentle fragrance.

Brits have over 15 billion unused items stashed away in their homes

Children’s toys, cassette tapes and receipts make the list of the UK’s most kept items in 2019 and as a nation, we’re too overwhelmed to clear them out.

Research released by the Swedish retailer, IKEA, found that despite the increasing popularity of minimalist home interiors in the UK, 92% of the country admit they still own unused items, with a quarter (25%) revealing they would even view themselves as an “everyday hoarder”.

The results found that toys including soft toys, dolls and board games are the most held onto items in British homes. The data revealed that on average, British children have 114 toys each, despite only playing with 10%. Consequently, more than 4 in 5 (81%) parents admit they struggle to find the space and suitable storage solutions for their children’s toys.

More than 2 in 5 (42%) Brits revealed that they keep items they no longer need or use due to the sentimental value they hold. Other contributing factors include not being able to find the time (23%), not knowing where to start (17%), or where to store the items (16%). As a result, 20% of the nation reveal they only de-clutter their home once a year, with 7% of the country admitting that they never have!

Inspired by the hotly anticipated sequel to the iconic children’s movie, today, IKEA has announced it will be launching ‘Toy Stor-age Points’ in eight stores across the UK from 29th March - 31st March. At these stations, visitors have the opportunity to gift their preloved toys to the UK’s largest children’s charity, Barnardo’s. The charity will then sell on donations in its shops to raise money for its vital services, which help more than 301,000 vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers across the UK.

And what’s more, customers who donate their unused toys will be given a £10 discount when they spend £70 on any of IKEA’s toy storage solutions, including TROFAST, KALLAX, FRITIDS, STUVA, FLYTTBAR and many more to help them gain control of the toys that remain in their homes.

Award-winning British children’s cutlery brand launches second innovative product aimed at babies

A new spoon and fork set, researched and designed specifically for babies from six months of age as their first introduction to cutlery, has been launched by the British best-selling children’s cutlery brand, Doddl.

Show winners

The first day of Harrogate finished with celebrations as the winners of the Baby Products Association’s annual industry awards were announced.

The winner of the Concept & Innovation Award is Christopher Melia with Cot Cool a clever device to lower the temperature in a baby’s sleep environment during hot weather. Christopher was presented with a trophy and will also receive free legal advice as his prize from sponsor law firm 3Volution.
