Nursery Online - Latest News
That was the (brilliant) week that was…

Another Harrogate has been and gone, and although tiring, the consensus is that Harrogate exceeded all expectations.

There were the usual mumblings of it seeming quiet but even the moaners had to admit that exhibitors were delighted by the results, as were the retailers with what they found. Indeed several retailers ran out of time and didn't get to see everyone they wanted to.

Retailers from across the country – from Scotland to Torquay – came, although London appeared to be poorly represented. Many of the majors did in fact come, although it appears that they were 'just looking'. It really is the time of the indie! It is they who will be driving this market forward in the next few years.

The return of several 'big' suppliers certainly helped. As I have said in the past, you don't need to bring everything and although I don't take credit for their strategy, Silver Cross certainly made waves by having a pushchair-free stand!! Their rationale was that their pushchairs are well-known and they wanted to shout about their new range of car seats. The message certainly got through and their stand was busy throughout the show.

Invictus is a new brand to the UK and signed up 38 new retailers. Most visitors commented that they had heard about the brand. This goes to show the power of advertising. (And it was all through Nursery Online, folks, even if many of you couldn't remember!)

There were many interesting new products. I met milkymeter last year in Cologne and was impressed. Mothers are often told not to use the microwave to heat baby's bottle because of the danger of overheating, but many parents do it anyway. Milkymeter is a thermometer for use in the microwave and solves the problem.

Another European company has arrived in the UK. Childhome is a company whose products I've seen and loved at K+J and now they have appointed CuddleCo to be their UK distributor. And (probably not surprisingly as it often wins awards), their EVOLU ONE.80 was the winner in the Home & Nursery category of the BANTAs.

There were several developments in monitors. Babymoov have extended their range to include several more and there were three new brands. Parvel is a Swedish company with a tiny monitor that you can take wherever you go. The Liip Smart Monitor fastens around baby's ankle or wrist and alerts if anything is amiss with baby's vital signs and Topcom showcased a range of monitors, themometers, scales and accessories

Baby Oliver had some beautiful bedding which retailers will need to have in stock before the Royal baby arrives. The high end, hand-carved furniture from Babeek may not be to everyone's taste but, boy, does it make a statement!

I’d love to talk more about the lovely products that were on show and I’m sure to be cross with myself for forgetting so and so – and of course what’s-their-name. So sorry if I’ve missed you. Send me a press release for our next newsletter!

I've been aware that many in the industry were concerned that Trade shows had had their day, but this week in Harrogate has proved them wrong - very wrong!

The dates for next year are 29th to 31st March 2020 and with so many exhibitors saying they'll be back, the team will be needing more space.

- Cathy

BabaBing’s Raffi pushchair in demand

Since its launch at the end of last year, demand for BabaBing’s first pushchair Raffi is growing exponentially.

Now stocked by 35 independent retailers across the UK and Europe and counting, the Raffi travel system is proving a hit with parents-to-be looking for a high-end pushchair that offers both style and functionality in equal measures.

Jamie Robinson, Sales Director comments: “We knew when we launched the Raffi that we were entering a competitive sector with well-established brands. Therefore, we knew that we had to get the product exactly right with elements that made it stand out from the crowd and I think we have achieved that and its testament to the Raffi that we already have so many retailers taking the product and demand is growing with customers contacting us to order more stock. It’s a really exciting time and we are looking forward to BabaBing! becoming a recognisable pushchair brand with consumers.”

The clean, sleek lines of the Raffi demonstrate classic British design and quality and the durable neoprene looks modern as well as being practical. The fabric is complemented by textured knitted upholstery fabrics and premium leatherette handlebar and bumper bar.

The buzz is back in Harrogate

According to initial feedback, the UK’s only baby trade show – Harrogate International Nursery Fair – is firmly back on the map!

Exhibitors reported packed order books and retailers are worrying about finding space in their stores for the fabulous new products they ordered!

Shnuggle – Clever Baby Products extended a big thank you for the massive support of so many independents at Harrogate stating: “We have exhibited every year for the last eight years and each year we get a little bigger. We are glad to be part of this great UK tradition and opened lots of new accounts and caught up with many existing ones too.”

Nicola Carrera of WHL Europe, which returned to the show in 2019, commented: “We attended with our three brands Pink Lining, Purflo and Koo-Di and our stand was buzzing with lots of lovely comments. We truly know we did the right thing in coming to Harrogate this year and we loved seeing new and existing retailers. We thought the layout of the show worked well and there was definitely a spark in the air!”

Invictusbaby UK was a new exhibitor and Donna Kosloff, sales director, commented: “We had a sensational show. We specialise in boutique retailers and signed up 38 new shops; and almost everyone visiting our stand placed an order. We brought a sledge to the show as part of our stand display and this proved so popular, with retailers asking for one for their shops, that we offered a free one with every order of 12 dolls prams.”

Retailer Mehzabeen Patel of Mums Mate in Bolton thoroughly enjoyed her visit pointing out some of her show favourites such as the new Santino and Plumo from Mee-go; the Giggle 4 from Cosatto; and collections from Nania and Venicci. She commented: “It’s now time to sell, sell, sell in store as I need a clear floor to accommodate all of my Harrogate deliveries. The offers at the show made it really worthwhile attending. Well done to everyone exhibiting – it was nice to meet people I had spoken to on the phone and put faces to names.”

Adrian Sneyd, show organiser, said: “This year has been an amazing turn-around for Harrogate. We saw the return of major brands as well as new product launches from regular exhibitors and those brand new to the show. There was a definite buzz in the air throughout the entire three days and early feedback suggests that business was good all-round.

“We look forward to welcoming everyone back in 2020 – the dates are 29th to 31st March 2020. Bookings will open in May, with priority given to all existing exhibitors who will be contacted directly nearer the time.”

Another win for the Childhome EVOLU ONE.80°

The first day of the Harrogate International Nursery Fair ended in a big celebration for Childhome. Their famous high chair with swivel function, the EVOLU ONE.80°, was the winner in the Home & Nursery category of the Baby and Nursery Trade Awards 2019 (BANTA’s).

This being the seventh award for the EVOLU ONE.80°, Childhome needs to look for a bigger prize cabinet.

Together with their newly appointed UK distributor CuddleCo, Childhome exhibited at the Harrogate International Nursery Fair from Sunday 24th to Tuesday 26th March 2019. The Nursery Fair is the place to be for all parties of the UK’s nursery industry. The EVOLU ONE.80° stood out thanks to its beautiful design, adjustable height and handy swivel function.

The unique and multifunctional EVOLU ONE.80° already won multiple prestigious awards all over the world: the Baby Innovation Award and Consumer Award in The Netherlands, the Kind+Jugend Innovation Award in Germany, the Top Choice Award from Baby Maternity Magazine in Nevada (USA) and the JPMA Innovation Award in Washington DC (USA). This year in January the EVOLU ONE.80° won the Best Of The Fair Award in Hong Kong.

“This BANTA is our seventh award for the EVOLU ONE.80°. I think we have to look for a bigger price cabinet to fit them all.” – Cédric Rodrigues, Head of International Sales at Childhome.

Childhome, incorporated and ensouled by Stefan & Nathalie Aerts, is a Belgian manufacturer of baby products. Their philosophy is based on improving the lives of young parents. Whilst designing their products in the best interest of a child, they always stay true to their four core values - Innovation, Comfort, Safety and Passion. Currently, Childhome is available in over 50 countries worldwide. But they keep expanding.

“Childhome is a company with worldwide ambitions. We’ve proven this again in February this year by opening our own office and warehouse in the United States,” so says Stefan Aerts, founder of Childhome.

Splash Jacks: New mould-resistant pool, bath and teether toys from Splash About

Designed by trusted baby safety swimwear brand Splash About, Splash Jacks are soft, tactile water toys ideal for teething babies who like to put everything in their mouths.

Unlike many water toys Splash Jacks don’t have an air hole for water to enter and create a build-up of black mould, they are made from all-natural rubber, free from toxins BPA, PVC and Phthalates and dyed using food grade paint that won’t flake. With an RRP of £9.99 for a pack of three, Splash Jacks are designed to stay afloat making them perfect toys for the pool or in the bath.

Splash Jacks soft, squidgy texture is designed to stimulate baby’s senses. Their ergonomic shape is easy for little fingers to hold and the nodules are designed to relieve sore gums and teeth. Splash Jacks come in three bright colours – red, yellow and green – they are ideal for young play and provide a welcome distraction for babies who don’t yet enjoy their bath or swim time.

“Splash Jacks were inspired by a lack of really good quality swim toys on the market,” commented Bernadette Spofforth, Managing Director of Splash About.

“Parents often resort to taking balls into the pool to stimulate, entertain and sooth young children, but these are difficult to grab and hold; Splash Jacks’ unique shape and tactile finish means that they don’t slip out-of-reach.

Swim-teacher approved and designed specifically to stay afloat in water Splash Jacks are perfect for playing simple games in the swimming pool or the bath, like peek-a-boo or grabbing the teether. These activities are important because they also help to develop baby’s cognitive, creative and social development skills.

Suitable from birth, Splash Jacks are available now from in a pack of three for £9.99.

Baby Kingdom Collection founder reveals how ingredients ‘let babies smell like babies’

The founder of Baby Kingdom Collection has revealed how the ingredients of their products ‘let babies smell like babies’.

Caroline Mukherjee, brand founder at the premium British baby toiletries brand which launched last November, is letting UK distributors know what makes them different from other baby skincare products on the market.

Mukherjee explained that the range of Baby Kingdom Collection products, which includes a natural baby shampoo, body cream, talc-free baby powder, nappy cream and 2-in-1 hair and body wash, uses a combination of key ingredients ideal for young, delicate skin with a unique gentle fragrance.

The active ingredients used across the range, include Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Nettle Extracts, Panthenol, Vitamin E, Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Castor Oil and Shea butter.

She said: “We worked with a top independent chemist in Devon on some of the best ingredients, all of which were non-irritating, non-allergenic, non-toxic and either renewable or vegetable based. The outcome is a collection which smells as natural as a newborn baby and is 97-99 per cent natural.

“The Aloe Vera and Nettle Extracts were chosen for their healing and hydrating properties. Chamomile is not just excellent for reducing inflammation but also a natural cleanser. Vitamin E was selected for its moisturising and antioxidant capabilities and Panthenol to protect and heal. The Coconut Oil, Argan Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Castor Oil and Shea butter are all excellent natural moisturisers.”

Mukherjee explained that the ‘baby smell’ that the Baby Kingdom Collection is becoming so recognised for took around eight months to develop until the company was completely happy with it.

“Throughout the process, we were absolutely committed to our goal of achieving a natural fragrance which leaves babies smelling like babies,” she said. “The last thing we wanted was to create an overpowering smell - no one wants their baby to smell like perfume!

“Instead we spent eight months perfecting the scent to get the perfect, fresh, clean, ‘baby’ smell which was gentle on the skin and this was made possible using a balance of delicate, fragrance. The fragrance we chose are vegan-friendly and combine synthetic and natural ingredients, which have a long history of being safe on even the most delicate of skin.”

Baby Kingdom Collection has received a lot of positive feedback on the company’s social media, especially Instagram. Mukherjee added: “We have been delighted with the feedback from distributors and parents and Baby Kingdom has received so many positive comments across our social platforms about its signature scent and also its healing properties and gentle effectiveness for babies and children with sensitive skin.”

The Baby Safe campaign is live and kicking!

Baby Safe have been working towards launching a crowdfunding campaign to bring the Safe Sleep Seat to market. The campaign is live on Crowdcube and has already raised an amazing 52%!

What that means is that Baby Safe are offering shares to the greater public, and with your support they can make the Safe Sleep Seat a reality.

What is the ‘Safe Sleep Seat?’

Like most parent’s mum Lisa, CEO Baby Safe, would watch her daughters fall asleep in their car seats and more often than not their head would flop forward. She became frustrated that the only way to remedy the situation would be to stop the car to recline the seat, which of course isn’t always an option, and trying to reach back was dangerous, there had to be a better way!

Enter the Safe Sleep Seat. After five years of research and development, Lisa has developed a car seat that can be safely reclined at the touch of a wireless button, while driving. As an ex-policewoman, safety is paramount for Lisa and this has driven the design of the Safe Sleep Seat. Baby Safe has been granted a UK patent and is now on the verge of its first production of seats, and to do this Baby Safe is currently raising capital on Crowdcube, one of the UK’s leading equity crowdfunding platforms.

Investing via Crowdcube is easy, all you need to do is register with their vast community and you can invest from as little as £10 to as much as you like in companies like Baby Safe.

We know parents and carers are best placed to understand Lisa’s motives in creating the Safe Sleep Seat. Go over to our crowdfunding page now at and take a look at the campaign page to find out more along with the great rewards we have for you.

With the dangers of breathing issues for babies in car seats from birth to six months making the headlines recently, and the rollout of the iSize regulation, there has never been a greater need for the Safe Sleep Seat.

Brits have over 15 billion unused items stashed away in their homes

Children’s toys, cassette tapes and receipts make the list of the UK’s most kept items in 2019 and as a nation, we’re too overwhelmed to clear them out.

Research released by the Swedish retailer, IKEA, found that despite the increasing popularity of minimalist home interiors in the UK, 92% of the country admit they still own unused items, with a quarter (25%) revealing they would even view themselves as an “everyday hoarder”.

The results found that toys including soft toys, dolls and board games are the most held onto items in British homes. The data revealed that on average, British children have 114 toys each, despite only playing with 10%. Consequently, more than 4 in 5 (81%) parents admit they struggle to find the space and suitable storage solutions for their children’s toys.

More than 2 in 5 (42%) Brits revealed that they keep items they no longer need or use due to the sentimental value they hold. Other contributing factors include not being able to find the time (23%), not knowing where to start (17%), or where to store the items (16%). As a result, 20% of the nation reveal they only de-clutter their home once a year, with 7% of the country admitting that they never have!

Inspired by the hotly anticipated sequel to the iconic children’s movie, today, IKEA has announced it will be launching ‘Toy Stor-age Points’ in eight stores across the UK from 29th March - 31st March. At these stations, visitors have the opportunity to gift their preloved toys to the UK’s largest children’s charity, Barnardo’s. The charity will then sell on donations in its shops to raise money for its vital services, which help more than 301,000 vulnerable children, young people, parents and carers across the UK.

And what’s more, customers who donate their unused toys will be given a £10 discount when they spend £70 on any of IKEA’s toy storage solutions, including TROFAST, KALLAX, FRITIDS, STUVA, FLYTTBAR and many more to help them gain control of the toys that remain in their homes.

Award-winning British children’s cutlery brand launches second innovative product aimed at babies

A new spoon and fork set, researched and designed specifically for babies from six months of age as their first introduction to cutlery, has been launched by the British best-selling children’s cutlery brand, Doddl.

Doddl has seen international success from their original product, Doddl cutlery for young children, and is now adding to their range with their second product, the Doddl Baby Cutlery and Travel Case. Doddl’s new product comprises a fork and spoon based on the expert design of the brand’s core cutlery line. With brightly-coloured non-slip pads on the compact handle to suit a baby’s palmer grip, it also ingeniously encourages the development of their pincer grip; a key motor skill.

The Doddl baby fork and spoon are ergonomically shaped for optimal success in facilitating the baby’s scooping of the food. It promotes the use of one utensil in each hand, hereby improving overall confidence control and brain development. The set includes a hygienic storage case which enables babies to familiarise themselves with cutlery at every mealtime, whether at home or out and about.

Doddl Managing Director, Catherine Dodd, said: “Our original product line has been hailed by child development experts as the number one baby-led cutlery and embraced by thousands of young children around the world who are now able to enjoy the process of learning to self-feed. By introducing a set for babies, we are extending our mealtime support to a child’s very first experience of cutlery, enabling families to eat together happily wherever they are.

“At Doddl, we refute the suggestion that babies can’t feed themselves. We say they can, if given the time, the choice and the right tools. Just as our original set turned the children’s cutlery industry on its head, we expect a similar reaction to our unique baby cutlery. We’ve been working on the prototypes for over a year, researching and testing alongside child development experts, as we did with our original cutlery, and we’re genuinely excited to offer babies a more positive experience with food from the very start.”

The global customer base of this British business has encouraged Doddl business partners Catherine Dodd, Rosie Phelps Goggin and Laura Thomas to launch their new product on the international crowdfunding platform Indiegogo, giving customers across the world the opportunity to be the first to receive their sets in July 2019 and benefit from a range of offers. Doddl’s Indiegogo campaign opened on 26th March 2019 and runs for 30 days.

The new Doddl Baby Cutlery and Travel Case is available in Lime Green and is manufactured to a high standard.
